Of course there’s no evidence. That’s proof of how deep and powerful the conspiracy is.

A far more likely explanation is something Cracked readers like myself know as “the Monkeysphere.”

Us humans can only count so many people as fellow humans in our subconscious. Even though we consciously know better, our subconscious can’t process being a part of a global community, or even being part of a community numbering in the mere thousands.

This results in tribal, cultural, national, racial, and religious prejudices and the mentality that everyone outside “our group,” i.e. our monkeyshpere, must be stupid and/or subhuman, and/or worse yet out to get us. To a mind that has succumbed to this base human mental limitation, the notion that “they’re all in on it. They’re colluding against us,” makes sense despite all evidence and logic to the contrary.

This is a flaw with all human brains, yours and mine included. Thats why, despite mocking right-wingers for their denial of evolution and climate change, lots suburban left-wingers are vaccine science deniers. “Sure, its silly to think all of the scientists are conspiring to spread satanic lies and propaganda. But vaccines are different, because all of the doctors are lying so they and pharmaceutical corporations can profit from our bad health.”

Its easy to believe in vast conspiracies of many, many people out to get you. You just have to stop consciously thinking of them as people, then let your subconscious take it from there. Then the racial code-talk of “inner-city welfare queens” will seem alot more reasonable to you.

It’s a way for people who feel their lives are boring and ordinary to imagine they’re special and important, because they know some “truth” that other people can’t see.

While these are all interesting, and my own conclusion is very similar to Charles Johnson’s, these are all non-conspiracy believers writing about conspiracy believers. I’m still trying to find out from a real conspiracy believer what drives his world view.

Maybe these people should try LARPing or S&M, just as much fantasy but more socially acceptable.

CJ was talking about why. I was talking about how.

I understand why that seems speculative, and you’re probably right. But the type of response you’re hoping for kinda boils down to conspiracy theorists psychoanalyzing themselves. I just don’t see that happening anytime soon.

some people cannot deal with the fact that history-making events happen without their input, or are accomplished violating central tenets of their own ideology.

Some things like men walking on the moon are so huge in scope and so outside the realm of possibility for any single person to accomplish that the only possibility in their mind is it must be a conspiracy.

What first hand experience do you have for believing in anything at all? Ask Descartes. He walked into a bar and the bartender asks him if he wants a drink. I think not he says and disappeared forever.
